Lion Vessel (about 600-575 BC)

Made to hold scented oils, this ceramic vessel is rare because of its innovative design. Harmonious proportions highlight refined decoration painted in delicate detail. As a perfume container, the object joins larger numbers of simpler, small-scale Corinthian vessels filled with precious ointment and exported throughout the Mediterranean-not unlike the current importation in specially designed bottles of perfumes from afar.
