Female Statuette (about 575-550 BC)

Greek sculpted figures of young women (korai) produced in the 6th century BC appear more animated than those of the previous century; their facial expressions seem more lifelike, and their arms are often raised at the elbows. This terracotta statuette, a votive dedication found near the sanctuary of the goddesses Demeter and Kore, is one of several similar figures created in a workshop in Gela. These statues were influenced by Ionian (East Greek) sculptural styles, as seen in the hair and clothing.
