Hydria (about 530-520 BC) This unique bronze hydria, or water vessel, has a handle sculpted in the form of a lion, a symbol of power and authority for the ancient Greeks. The container is one of six hydriae discovered in an underground chamber which may have been dedicated to the founder of Posidonia (Paestum). Perhaps made in Taranto, Cumae, or Sparta (Laconia), the vessel contained the solidified remains of honey when excavated also on display in the exhibition.
