Pentagonal Plate (about 4000-3800 BC) This large plate was made in ancient Sicily thousands of years before the arrival of Greek colonists to the island, providing a glimpse into Sicily's early history prior to Greek influence. Probably used in funerary ceremonies, the piece was found in a tomb in the cemetery of Piano Vento, Agrigento. The clay is fired dark gray and is decorated with incised lines which suggest plant imagery. The plate has five raised, pointed areas along the rim and a central hole for suspension at the top.Page 1 of 8 | On the next page: Bull-Man Object (about 3200-2800 BC) |
