Hoplite Statuette (about 530 BC)

This bronze statuette was found in a sanctuary sacred to the goddess Athena in the ancient Greek city of Sybaris. Made during the 6th century BC, the Greek Archaic period, it exhibits features characteristic of sculpture of the time. The heavily armed warrior (hoplite) statuette wears a cuirass (bronze breastplate) and a helmet with a tall crest, but he is otherwise nude. Nude male figures were conventional for the period.
