Stone Head (about 500 BC)

This rare, complete marble head of an unidentified individual was once inserted into a figure made of a different material, perhaps wood, stone or terracotta.

Statues of this type, called acroliths, are characteristic of Western Greece because marble as a sculptural material was scarce in the region. Two other incomplete heads recovered from the same sanctuary have been associated with the present example; of these two more fragmented versions, one may represent the goddess Athena.
