Tomb Painting (about 350 BC) Paestum is known for its large number of well-preserved tomb paintings, of which this example is among the most exquisite. The scene depicts a common subject portrayed in tombs which are decorated in the Greek style. Wrapped in a shroud, the deceased lies upon a funerary bed as two women prepare her body for the prothesis, or ritual laying out of the dead. The large red pomegranates painted on each side of the scene symbolize fertility and life. Page 6 of 6 | On the next page: Caryatid Lamp (about 580-570 BC) |
