Bull-Man Object (about 3200-2800 BC) Like the Pentagonal Plate [cat. no. 64], this hand-modeled and painted terracotta sculpture was made long before the Greeks arrived in Sicily. It was also found in the cemetery of Piano Vento, Agrigento. Its original function is not known, but it may have been a lid for a container of some type. The sculpted figure appears to have the body of a bull and the bust of a human being. Such a composite creature is similar, but not directly related, to the half-beast, half-human figures prominent in Greek myth.Page 2 of 8 | On the next page: Triskeles Dinos (about 610-600 BC) |
