Marriage Altar (about 400-350 BC)
This terracotta altar from Taranto may have served some purpose in wedding preparation. On it is a scene of a bride aided by Aphrodite and Eros in preparation for her wedding. The bride sits atop a high kline (klee-nay) with cushions and pillows. She lifts her veil to receive a ribbon presented to her by Eros, who flies out of his mother's hand. Beneath the kline is likely the bride's handmaid seated on a bench with lion's paw feet.
