Mirror with Satyr and Youth (about 400-350 BC)
This mirror, found in a tomb, possesses a delicate and masterfully rendered scene at the point where the base of the mirror joins the top of the handle. The scene is both Dionysiac and erotic. Satyrs, the wild followers of the god of wine, Dionysos, are anything but moderate in their consumption of wine. Once drunk, there's no telling who they will harass. This satyr tenderly touches a sleeping youth. The scene is in the wilderness, as suggested by the incised flowers and vegetation below the sleeping youth. The scene is whimsical and finely executed.
