During his summer visit to Pourville, Monet continued to produce dramatic cliff-top compositions. (See View over the Sea of 1882) Two figures—possibly two of Alice Hoschedé’s daughters—venture toward the cliff’s windswept edge, taking in the exhilarating view. The day is bright; sunlight illuminates the hillside, which is alive in a kaleidoscope of colors. The network of brushstrokes on the hillside is dynamic and agitated, as though affected by the elemental forces of wind and water.
