Monet’s public career officially began when the Paris Salon accepted two paintings for exhibition in 1865. This canvas is one of that pair of grand seascapes that earned Monet critical acclaim. His treatment of the landscape acknowledged conventional techniques of picture-making while simultaneously announcing his precocious skill in observing and transcribing natural phenomena with a uniquely personal vision.
