La Chapelle de Notre-Dame de Grâce, Honfleur, 1864
Oil on canvas
Private Collection
Situated on a peaceful hillside, the 17th-century chapel of Our Lady of Grace was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her role as protector of all who make their living from the sea. Although his representation of the church is relatively straightforward, Monet disregarded conventional devices of traditional perspective and attention to detail. Instead, he rendered foliage and architecture with broad dabs and strokes of paint. The shimmering strip visible beyond the trees is the distant English Channel.
