Among Monets favorite haunts, the village of Pourville near Dieppe featured a boardwalk, broad beaches, and stunning cliffs. Here reflections of the chalky cliffs sparkle across the water. These shimmering brushstrokes of cream and pale yellow balance the large expanse of blue water and sky. Monet described the setting in a letter to Alice Hoschedé: One could not be any closer to the sea than I am, on the pebbled beach itself, and the waves beat at the foot of the house.
