Waves at the Manneporte, 1883/85
Oil on canvas
Private Collection
This canvas depicts the Manneporte from almost the same vantage point as
The Manneporte (Étretat). Monets loose handling of the paint suggests the informality of a sketch executed on the spot. Staccato brushstrokes record the momentary effects of sunlight striking the inner face of the arch and the spray of breaking waves.
