Varieties in Stone Settings

The jeweled objects in this section were selected for their gem settings, detailed images of which are illustrated in the exhibition. The pieces vary in scale, material, and function yet are related based on similar technical and artistic details.

The complete artistic freedom enjoyed by the Indian jeweler resulted largely from the exclusively Indian development and use of the kundan technique. In this technique, hyper-refined pure gold in the form of foil is made to fuse together at room temperature using only hand-tool pressure to form gold elements that, for all practical purposes, are solid. This technique works extremely well.
