The Impressionist Table Lecture

Culinary historian and author Alexandra Leaf will discuss the fascinating world of 19th-century cafe's, picnics, concerts, and restaurants and their significance to such painters as Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This lecture will be followed by a tea party in the Oasis.

Leaf is the author of The Impressionists Table: Recipes and Gastronomy of 19th Century France (Rizzolli International Publications, 1994), a historical overview of 100 recipes modernized and updated for today's use. Internationally renowned chef Jacques Pépin selected various wines for each meal described in the book.

Independent scholar Dr. Debra N. Mancoffs lecture offers a vital portrait of Claude Monet and his enduring vision of nature's beauty. She is the author of Monet's Garden in Art, which focuses on the artist's paintings and explores his favorite flowers and flower-inspired techniques. A garden party on the South Terrace will precede this lecture at 6 p.m.
