Paul Cézanne, Ginger Pot with Pomegranate and Pears, 1890-93

Phillips loved still-life paintings and dreamed of acquiring a still life by Cézanne, one of the great masters of this type of painting. He passed over numerous examples, however, until he saw this painting in 1939. The solidity and dignity of this classic work, once owned by Claude Monet, recalls the luminous arrangements of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon
Chardin.
