List of Speakers Bureau Presentations Introducing the Cleveland Museum of ArtIf you've never visited the Cleveland Museum of Art, or did so 20 years ago, this presentation will bring you up to speed on one of the world's great art collections, as well as all the activities and events that take place at the museum. It's a great presentation for any group wanting to know what is available so they can make the best use of their time when visiting. The Highlights Tour Presentation If you have only an hour to visit and want to see why the Cleveland Museum of Art is world renowned, this presentation will do just that. There is something wonderful from every period for novices and the serious art-lovers who want to learn more about the CMA collection. Egypt This presentation highlights the museum's Egyptian collection and unveils the mysteries of this ancient civilization, from gods and kings to everyday life. This lecture is great preparation for a visit to the galleries. The Early Christian and Byzantine Galleries The beginnings of Christianity and the Byzantine world are intertwined in time because they coexisted in Italy, Greece, and Turkey during the early centuries. Their shared symbols, stories, craftsmanship, and ideology resulted in some of the most beautiful and interesting works of art ever produced. This presentation highlights some of the finest works from our permanent collection of the Early Christian and Byzantine art: ivory carvings, tapestries, gold jewelry, and many other treasures. Unfolding Beauty: Japanese Screens from the Cleveland Museum of Art Special Exhibition: July 15-September 16, 2001 The CMA's holdings of Japanese folding screens (byõbu) are among the finest outside Japan. Dating from the 16th through 19th centuries, the screens or pairs of screens chosen for this exhibition include Japanese-style colorful compositions as well as examples of more subjued ink paintings that focus on Chinese subjects such as flowers, birds, and life at court. Haniging scrollls created by some of the same painters, as well as works in lacquer, ceramic, and metalwork, will complement the sreens. Most of these paintings are quite large (a pair of screens may be 25 feet wide), and all are susceptible to damage from exposure to light, so the exhibition will be shown in two groups or "rorations" of 12-15 works each. And...Coming October 2001 Picasso: The Artist's Studio Special Exhibition: October 21, 2001-January 6, 2002 This exhibition explores one of the most important, unifying ideas in Pablo PIcasso's art: the theme of the artist's studio. From the first years of his career to the last years of his life, PIcasso repeatedly depicted the studio as a primary site of creative expression. For Picasso, the artist's studio was the crossroads of all that occurred in his life and society. This exhibition and the accompanying catalogue will demonstrate the theme's central place in Picasso's art and the remarkable variety of ways in which he merged the studio theme with portraiture, still life, allegory, and interiors. Featuring about 37 paintings and 9 drawings borrowed from collections around the world, the exhibition presents a balanced selection of works from nearly every major period and style in Picasso's art. |
