The Collections

Over the past 90 years the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art have become globally comprehensive and includes 41,255 works of art from all times and places, from ancient Egypt and ancient Greece and Rome to contemporary and modern works of art. CMA is especially renowned for the breadth and quality of its collections. Acquiring approximately 300 works of art per year, CMA’s acquisition funds are among the largest of all American museums.

Particularly notable are its comprehensive Asian collection of some 3,933 works, its Medieval European art, and its Pre-Columbian holdings. The preeminent collection of European art includes a depth of medieval material rare in American museums, and American art is well represented.

The painting collection includes masterpieces by Caravaggio, El Greco, Poussin, Rubens, Hals, David, Goya, Turner, Matisse, Renoir, Gauguin, Church, Cole, Corot, Eakins, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Bellows. The museum has been particularly active recently in acquiring later 20th-century art, having added important works by Warhol, Pollock, Christo, Kiefer, Richter, Clemente, Kossoff, Close, Mangold, Tansey, and LeWitt, among others.
