The design of the egg, which was Alexander III's gift to his wife, Maria Feodorovna, alludes to the failing health of their son Georgi Aleksandrovich (1871-1899), whose portrait is seen on the top. He had been sent to the Caucasus in hopes of recovery, and the views are of the imperial hunting lodge, Abastuman. The stand is not original.
