Past Exhibitions | Gifts of the Nile

The interior of the brilliantly glazed bowl above shows a young girl playing a lute (ad 14, Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden ). She sits on a cushion beneath an arbor of grape vines, lotus buds, and blossoms draped over her elbows. The monkey tugging at her girdle and the tattoo on her right have erotic overtones linking the young girl with Hathor, the goddess of love and beauty.
