Past Exhibitions | Gifts of the Nile | Patricia Griffin

Patricia Griffin looks for evidence of how a pyxis and its lid were manufactured (around 1980-1540 BC, Gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust 1914.609). Her examination using a powerful microscope revealed that the object had two glazes. Some of the colored salts used in the first glaze migrated to the surface during firing, creating an uneven color. The top glaze was applied to correct those irregularities.
