Portrait of Cardinal Guillaume Dubois, Hyacinthe Rigaud (French, 1659 - 1743) 1723
1967.17
Gallery 6 | Dutch and French Art: The Global Marketplace, Around 1700

Cardinal Dubois rose from the family of a small-town druggist to become one of the most powerful people in France. He joined the court as a tutor to King Louis XIV’s great-grandson, who eventually became King Louis XV. Dubois holds a letter with the words Au Roi (to the king), commemorating the moment when his student was finally old enough to become king, a status that Dubois had the honor of proclaiming.
