Coffin of Bakenmut

Coffin of Bakenmut | 1914.561

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, late Dynasty 21 (1069-945 BC) - early Dynasty 22 (945-924 BC), c. 1000-900 BC, Not on display

The painted wood coffins made for the priests of Amen and their families at Thebes during the Twenty-First and early Twenty-Second Dynasties are the finest artistic creations of Egypt's Third Intermediate Period. All such coffins are mummiform, showing the deceased wearing an elaborate floral collar entirely covering the upper part of the body, with only the hands protruding. The lid of this coffin features imitation red leather mummy braces crossed over the chest.
