Abstract Art can be many different things and have many different types of meanings. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, artists tried to paint abstract ideas - the spiritual or emotional essence of a person or a thing, rather than how it really looked. In the 20th century Abstract Art came to mean non-representational art. Art where there is no subject but the shapes and colors.
