Artists such as Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) are often called "post-impressionists" because their art was a reaction to Impressionism. Different in both their use of color and form, post-impressionists also placed a greater emphasis on subject matter in their works.
