The Docent Program is a volunteer teaching service for the Department of Education and Academic Affairs. Docents interact with visitors and create lasting memories through tours of the finest artistic and cultural traditions represented in our collection. They act as an important liaison between the museum collections, visitors, and staff.
Docents lead more than fifteen thousand visitors through the museum each year with tours that highlight the permanent collection, special exhibitions, as well as customized tours designed for adult and school groups. Docents are active members of the museum and are offered free parking, coffee, and discounts in our café and gift shop. These dedicated volunteers have been an integral part of the Department of Education and Academic Affairs since 2000.
Training involves working with Education and Academic Affairs staff on interactive teaching techniques as well as attending lectures by museum curators focusing on aspects of the permanent collection galleries and overviews of special exhibitions. While we are not currently accepting applications for a new class, please register your name and contact information with Thomasine Clark, Docent Administrator, if you would like to be contacted at a later date. Thomasine Clark can be reached by phone at 216-707-2656 or by email at TClark [at] clevelandart.org.
