Adult Studios

All-Day Workshop: Lotus Chinese Painting Tue/Sep 6, 10:00–4:00 (lunch on your own), classroom E. Instructor: Mitzi Lai. Advanced students spend the day focusing on learning how to paint the lotus flower. $90, CMA members $70. Completion of the Four Gentlemen course is a prerequisite. Supply list at the ticket center.

Painting for Beginners (Oil and Acrylic) Eight Tue/Sep 13–Nov 1, 10:00–12:30, classroom F. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. Balance and contrast color, tonal relationships, pattern, texture, and form while building confidence with brushwork. $202, CMA members $155; includes model fee. Bring your own supplies or buy for $80 (to be paid the first day of class).

Introduction to Drawing Eight Tue/Sep 13–Nov 1, 1:00–3:30, classroom H. Instructor: JoAnn Rencz. Beginners learn simple yet effective drawing techniques using basic graphite and conté crayon on paper. $150, CMA members $120. Supplies provided or bring your own favorites. 

Drawing in the Galleries Eight Wed/Sep 14–Nov 2, 10:00–12:30, classroom F. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. Sculpture and paintings throughout the museum inspire drawing in charcoal and various pencils, including colored conté pencils. Students are encouraged to see light as contrasting shape while adding structure and detail with line, tone, and color. Practice, expression, and technique are equally encouraged. All skill levels welcome, including high school students needing observation work for college admission. $202, CMA members $155. All supplies provided.

Introduction to Painting Eight Wed/Sep 14–Nov 2, 10:00–12:30, classroom H. Instructor: Cliff Novak. Beginners learn simple painting techniques in color mixing and application with acrylic paints. Still-life objects serve as inspiration for this low-pressure course. $195, CMA members $150. 

Watercolor Eight Wed/Sep 14–Nov 2, 10:00–12:30, classroom G. Instructor: Jesse Rhinehart. Learn advanced color mixing and composition in a relaxed atmosphere. All skill levels welcome. $195, CMA members $150. Paper provided. Materials list discussed at first class for new students.  

Watercolor in the Evenings Eight Wed/Sep 14–Nov 2, 6:00–8:30, classroom G. Instructor: Jesse Rhinehart. Relax and unwind after work while practicing your painting techniques. Multimedia Abstract Art Eight Thu/Sep 15–Nov 3, 1:00–3:30, classroom H. Instructor: JoAnn Rencz. Gain a better understanding of composition by manipulating color, balance, and texture using oil pastels, acrylic paint, and collage. Experimentation is encouraged. All skill levels welcome. $195, CMA members $150. Supplies provided. 

Composition in Oil Eight Fri/Sep 16–Nov 4, 10:00–12:30, classroom F. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. Aesthetic expression emerges as compositions are refined with contrasting color, pattern, texture, tone, and line. Charcoal drawing on the first day leads to underpainting, wet-into-wet blending, and glazing. All skill levels welcome, including beginners and high school students needing observation work for college admission. $202, CMA members $155; includes model fee. All-Day Workshop: Painting on Silk Sat/Sep 24, 10:00–4:00 (lunch on your own), classrooms F and G. Instructor: Susan Skove. Learn skills to paint on silk using gutta, a linear resist. After demonstration and discussion of design ideas, you’re ready for a brief practice period, followed by painting your own silk scarf. Supply list at ticket center. $90, CMA members $75; $30 additional fee for dyes and silk fabric.

Gesture Drawing Three Sun/Oct 16–30, 12:30–3:00, classroom F, atrium, and galleries. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. Experience the brilliant light of the Ames Family Atrium while drawing a live model. Other afternoons are spent in the galleries. Practice, expression, and technique are equally encouraged. Quick poses in charcoal and conté are followed by longer drawings in various dry media: charcoal, graphite pencil, and colored conté pencils. $95, CMA members $85; includes model fee for one session. All supplies provided.

 

Cancellation policy: Classes with insufficient registration will be combined or canceled three days before class begins, with enrollees notified and fully refunded. Refunds are issued any time before the beginning of the session. After the first class, consideration will be given to refunds on an individual basis.
