Redon once said: "A portrait is the image of a character, of a human being, represented in its essence." Here he depicted the adolescent niece of the Paris collector Marcel Kapferer. For his commissioned portraits, the artist often placed the sitter against a floral background that gives the work a dreamlike quality.
