Description

Aaron Siskind began his photographic career in 1932, working in a social-documentary style. By 1944, however, he began to concentrate on radically different images that helped define an important mode of contemporary photographic expression. He isolated objects from their surroundings and transformed them into abstract images organized according to such formal concerns as composition, texture, scale, and the elimination of illusion. In Chicago 22, Siskind used a close-up view of peeling paint on a weathered wood wall to create a visually engaging image.
