Description
Although once attributed to the painter Louis Tocqué (1696-1772), this beautiful drawing of a young girl is closer to the work of another important portraitist of the 1700s, François-Hubert Drouais. The inscription at the lower left identifies the girl as a certain Marie-Thérèse, but this writing was probably added later, and we have no way of knowing for certain who she is.- Baderou, Paris, 1957 (according to 1979 sale cat.); Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Sonnenberg, New York; [their sale, Sotheby-Parke-Bernet, New York (5-9 June 1979), no. 85, repr. (as Louis Tocqué)]; purchased in 1979.
