Description
Born and raised in Russia, Vishniac moved to Germany after the revolution. A Jew, he moved to France to escape the Nazis, and in 1940 immigrated to New York where he began to do portrait work to earn a living. In 1941 he photographed the acclaimed Russian Jewish painter Marc Chagall who, like Vishniac, had recently arrived in New York fleeing the Nazis.- {{cite web|title=Marc Chagall, New York|url=false|author=Roman Vishniac|year=1941 (printed later)|access-date=19 April 2024|publisher=Cleveland Museum of Art}}
