Vuillard created this portrait of his sister Marie while she was living at home and working with their mother at her corset- and dressmaking business.Description
During the early 1890s, Édouard Vuillard repeatedly represented his mother and older sister, Marie, in domestic settings. This drawing relates to a pastel and painting, all of which show Marie standing before a mirror, raising her arms as if to adjust her hairstyle. A charcoal study of a nude male appears on the verso, suggesting that the artist may have reused the sheet.- 1892-1940studio of the artist1940family of the artistprobably 1940-1957(Sam Salz, New York)1957-1990private collection1990(sale, November 14, 1990, Sotheby’s, New York, no. 110, sold to William Kelly Simpson)1990-2018William Kelly Simpson [1928–2017], Katonah, NY, bequeathed to the Cleveland Museum of Art2018-Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
