watercolor and gouache over graphite, Sheet: 50.5 x 35.3 cm (19 7/8 x 13 7/8 in.). Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection 805.1930

Highly precocious, Burchfield created his first mature works around the time he graduated from the Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art in 1916. Regarded as milestones in the emergent modern movement in American art, these images are psychologically and emotionally charged responses to nature. He once stated that an artist should not reproduce what is seen, but rather “must invent symbols, which, if properly used, make his work seem even more real than what is in front of him.”
