The museum’s Connie Towson Ford Educators Academy is inviting teachers from all grade levels and disciplines to learn at the Igniting Student Success workshop, August 3 to 6.
Educators will come away with the skills to integrate art into their lesson plans while also focusing on literacy, math, science, and social studies. A variety of professionals will teach art-centered interdisciplinary approaches to help your classroom succeed.
The overarching theme for this workshop is color, and hands-on projects will be included in the sessions, culminating in a book that participants create. Be prepared to get creative!
The four-day institute will cover several topics that show teachers how to integrate arts (specifically from the museum’s collection) into everyday curricula.
Expression: The focus during this session is on historic media, such as prints, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings. Educators will learn how students can interpret the images and symbols in some of the works to understand the artist’s message and the piece in historical context.
Resources: We’d love to share our institution with you so that you can pass on that knowledge to your students! During these sessions, we’ll take participants on behind-the-scenes tours and give demonstrations of educational aspects of the museum. Educators will learn about our distance learning studio, the Print Study Room, the Ingalls Library, and our Art To Go program.
Experimentation: Educators will have the chance to participate in hands-on activities during these sessions. We’ll experiment with many different projects for classroom use and discuss their importance in lesson plans.
Creativity: Now’s the time to get creative! After hearing presentations about bookbinding, tempera paint making, and graphic fiction, educators will make their own books. We hope you’ll share your creation with your students, maybe even as a classroom model.
The workshop will take place August 3 to 6, from 9:45 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
The $260 fee includes daily lunch, parking, materials, and a certificate of attendance. A graduate credit hour from Ashland University is available for an additional $185.
The additional session for early childhood educators will be held on Saturday, August 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Educators will learn how to weave the theme of color through subjects including literacy, language development, and artistic expression. The $65 fee covers lunch, parking, materials, and a certificate of attendance.
Can’t attend the entire program? No problem! Mini sessions will be held Wednesday, August 4, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. or Thursday, August 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for $15. Attend the mini sessions, and you’ll still get to put together your own illuminated manuscript while learning how to combine art and instruction.
