March 1st found 35 Cleveland Museum of Art members attending a very different art tour; this time in a hospital – The Cleveland Clinic. The 4,000 objects in the collection are contemporary in nature. The works were chosen to bring together themes of art, science, and technology. The result is an environment where patients, families and staff live and work in an exhibition space – the Miller Family Pavilion and Glickman Tower.

The Art Ambassadors provided an atmosphere for a lively discussion as we learned about works that had been commissioned by Cleveland Clinic, works which were site specific, and objects that created great debates. Some objects appeared 3D but had no third dimension. Others drew us in as we watched the seasons change as the tree danced upon the wall or the turtles crawled across the floor.

The only way to truly enjoy the collection is to experience it and Cleveland Clinic has made this possible in several ways.

1 - The Art ambassador Tour is available Wednesday and Saturday at 11:00, 1:00, and 2:30. Meet at the Guest Services Desk, main entrance, Miller Pavilion.

2 – Pick up an audio guide at the Guest Services Desk and conduct your own tour.

3 – Download the audio art tour to your computer or listening device from http://my.clevelandclinic.org/art/audio/default.aspx [1].

The new Arts & Medicine Institute under the leadership of Executive Director Iva Fattorini, MD has been created with the purpose of integrating the visual arts, music, performing arts and research to promote healing and to enhance the lives of Cleveland Clinic patients, families, visitors and employees. Check out http://my.clevelandclinic.org/arts_medicine/default.aspx [2], to learn about programs available to community. Perhaps you too will come to believe that when art is integrated into patient care better health care is provided.
