New Yorker Critic Paul Goldberger to Discuss Why Architecture Matters

Posted on September 10, 2010 by ClevelandArt

[1]When we are bowled over by the emotional and intellectual impact of a building - that is when architecture matters. Famed architecture critic and scholar Paul Goldberger will present a lecture on “Why Architecture Matters [2]” at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Wednesday, September 15,, at 7:30 p.m [3]. thanks to the Womens Council of the Cleveland Museum of Art Speakers Series. The lecture elaborates on themes from his rec!

ently published book of the same title.

A prolific author and contributor to The New Yorker with his acclaimed “Sky Line” column since 1997, Goldberger has also authored Building Up and Tearing Down: Reflections on the Age of Architecture [4], Up From Zero: Politics, Architecture and the Rebuilding of New York [5], and Christo and Jeanne-Claude [6]. His work has garnered numerous accolades throughout his career; including a Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism in 1984, the President’s Medal of the Municipal Art Society of New York, and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission’s Preservation Achievement Award in recognition of the impact of his writing on historic preservation in the city.

As a guest on television’s The Colbert Report [7], Goldberger discussed the emotional and intellectual impact architecture projects into our everyday lives, whether it is the simplicity of a farmhouse or the majesty of a cathedral. Goldberger’s definition of why architecture matters goes beyond an Oxford English Dictionary entry and expands our understanding of the force of architecture in our world. He treats his subject with the same reverence usually reserved for the painted canvas or the written word. As he puts it, “Architecture begins to matter when it goes beyond protecting us from the elements, when it begins to say something about the world—when it begins to take on the qualities of art.”

Become part of the conversation and join us for “Why Architecture Matters.” Tickets for the event are $30 for the general public and $25 for museum members. A limited number of $5 tickets are available for students with a valid I.D. Tickets are available through the museum’s box office in person, by phone at 216-421-7350 or 1-888-CMA-0033, or online at www.ClevelandArt.org [8].
