Gartner Auditorium

“Shamma, and those like him—here I include Paganini, Liszt and Louis Armstrong—make a unique show of possession . . . a mystico-technological happening, rare in music. No other musician playing in Cairo has ever had such a power over such a large audience.” —David Blake, Al Ahram (Cairo)

Iraqi musical master and oud (lute) virtuoso Naseer Shamma is considered one of the most celebrated exponents of classical Arab music. His enchanting musical making ranges anywhere from the golden era of Arab music played at the courts of the Abbasid kings to passionate Andalusian music as well as collaborations with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Naseer has been director of House of the Oud at the Cairo Opera House since 1998, and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards in both his native home and abroad. Though he regularly participates in countless international festivals, he hasn’t performed in the U.S. for more than a decade. He will be performing with his ensemble Oyoun from Cairo. Cleveland debut.
