By examining American art and artifacts from the museum's collection, this series promotes discussion of America's national character and heritage. All five lessons, developed by teams of teachers, are accompanied by reinforcement materials specifically designed to foster critical thinking skills. These programs may be scheduled individually.

America Enduring, the fourth lesson in this series, covers 1913-1945, an era which includes unprecedented prosperity, The Great Depression, ensuing social and political change during the inter-war period, and the reaction to European influence: Regionalism.

Program Format: 
  • Introduce major themes of the lesson.
  • Discuss social, political, and economic conditions during the interwar period.
  • Discuss the influence and resistance to European cultural trends.
  • Discuss growth of urban imagery in the art of the 1920s and 1930s.
  • Discuss the rise and social impact of the consumer economy.
  • Discuss the causes and results of The Great Depression.
  • Today and Yesterday Brainstorming Table activity throughout the lesson.
Objectives: 
  • Students will learn that profound political, social and economic changes marked the interwar period and impacted the following sectors of society: technology, popular culture, international relations, and economics.
  • Students will also learn about important events that took place during this time period, including: the rise of consumer economy, the increase in urbanization, the Stock Market Crash, The Great Depression, The New Deal, and the growth of regionalism in art which accompanied a retreat from foreign ideas.
