The Cleveland Museum of Art's Open Access images were uploaded to the free media repository Wikimedia Commons and are including the associated collections metadata in Wikidata, Wikimedia's free knowledge base. This makes the images and metadata available for wide and impactful adoption in Wikipedia articles, in other Wikimedia projects, and for broad creative re-use by anyone.
"Wikimedia's non-profit and volunteer community is a natural ally for cultural institutions. Wikimedians are inspired by the same passion and mission as museums, libraries and archives: to share our world's culture and knowledge in the broadest way. Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and the other Wikimedia projects serve and build upon content in the public domain,. The Cleveland Museum of Art's adoption of a clear open access policy allows Wikimedia volunteers alongside other reusers to build more free knowledge with its collections, and to help give these the broadest possible impact. We hope it acts as a model for an increasing number of institutions who want to share their collections with the world."
