The Cleveland Museum of Art Announces Advance Ticket Sale Date for Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art

Cleveland, OH (February 18, 2019) – The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) announces ticket information for a major international loan exhibition opening this spring: Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art. On view only in Cleveland, the exhibition features a selection of rare works that possess high historic, artistic and academic value and are designated by the Japanese government as Important Cultural Properties. The exhibition is organized by the CMA with the special cooperation of the Nara National Museum.  

Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art presents artworks exemplifying Shinto, Japan’s unique belief system focused on the veneration of divine phenomena called kami. The exhibition is an expression of the everyday engagement of people with divinities in their midst. 

The exhibition presents about 125 works in different media—calligraphy, painting, sculpture, costume and decorative arts—assembled from more than 20 religious institutions and museums in Japan, including the Nara National Museum, and Shinto shrines from across Japan, including Kasuga Taisha (Nara) and Hōfu Tenmangū (Yamaguchi), as well as from 12 collections in the United States, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco. Most works from Japan are on view in the US for the first time. 

The Japanese government requires that works designated as Important Cultural Properties be shown for no more than several weeks each year to balance accessibility with preservation. Because of this and the sensitivity of other works on view, the exhibition will be shown in two rotations: April 9 to May 19 and May 23 to June 30, 2019. Approximately 80 percent of the works on view during the first rotation will be replaced with new works for the second rotation. 

Non-member tickets purchased during the first rotation (April 9 – May 19) can be redeemed to view the second rotation for free starting on May 23, 2019. Ticket holders should present their original tickets or order confirmation receipt on-site to redeem.

Ticket Pricing

Adults $10, seniors and college students $8, adult group rate $7, children 6–17 and member guests $5, children 5 and under and CMA members free.

The museum recommends reserving tickets through its online platform by visiting cma.org/exhibitions. Tickets can also be reserved by phone at 216-421-7350 or at the museum’s ticket center. Advance sales are highly recommended.  

The Cleveland Museum of Art is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays.
