Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene shows the autumn moon over Kanazawa, near Tokyo. Hiroshige’s contemporaries would have recognized the coastline dotted with villages, fishing boats, and the distinctive double-arched bridge at the bottom right.
A vertically oriented color woodblock print depicts a coastal landscape under a gray sky with a dark blue band at the top. In the foreground, a spindly pine tree rises from a sandy hill above clustered thatched-roof huts. Calm turquoise water fills the middle ground, featuring small islands and sailboats. Low blue-gray mountains line the horizon. Black calligraphy and a red seal mark the left, with three circular stamps marking the bottom right.
