Description

These three pairs of marble portrait busts depict an aristocratic Roman couple. They are unique in representing the same couple three times with only minor variations in costume. Allegedly found together with the Jonah Marbles, they may represent the Christian patrons who commissioned the Jonah cycle.
A marble bust depicts a woman looking slightly to our right, her lips pressed together in a straight line. She has a long nose and eyes hazily outlined with no pupils. Her hair is topped with a tall braided crown, with waves transitioning to curls beside her ears. A heavy cloak drapes across her shoulders in thick, rounded folds. The off-white stone, mounted on a tiered circular base, shows brownish staining in the crevices.
