These are the only known surviving sculpted examples of kneeling Carthusian monks. These two figures would have formed part of a private devotional group, probably in a monk’s cell, with a sculpture of the crucified Christ or the Virgin positioned between them. They wear the recognizable white scapular, a hooded garment with front and back panels tied together with a tab.

A small marble figurine depicts a tonsured monk kneeling toward the left. He wears a heavy, hooded robe with wide sleeves and a rectangular panel hanging over his chest. His hands are pressed together in prayer, and his head tilts upward. A thin ring of hair circles his otherwise shaven head. Deep folds of fabric pool at his base. The pale stone has a smooth, polished surface.
