Description

The highly finished surface of this sculpture, including the back, suggests it belonged to a refined collector. Small sculptures would often be held to admire details such as the strands of hair streaming onto Christ’s shoulders, the prominent veins in his forearms, and the intricate knotted cloth at his side.
A bronze sculpture depicts the crucified Christ, his head tilted toward his left shoulder and arms raised in a wide V-shape. His lean torso shows defined lines suggesting ribs. He wears a crown of thorns over wavy hair and a beard carved with fine lines. Holes pierce his upturned palms and overlapped feet. A rippling cloth wraps around his hips, knotted on the left. Polished highlights gleam on the dark brown limbs.
