Description

The bird in this image is pictured twice. First, a gardener carefully manicured the topiary into a "natural" form, but one that is, of course, very unnatural for a plant. Then, Bill Brandt’s photograph of the topiary reframes the gardener’s representation of nature. The manipulation of the animal form here resonates with other works that arrange animals into artful poses, as this image does.
