Did You Know?

Mount was an accomplished fiddle player and even patented a new design for the instrument.

Description

Set in rural Long Island before the Civil War, Mount's complex painting presents an African American laborer listening intently to a fiddle tune enjoyed by white men. While a love of music unites the figures in a bond of shared humanity, the two races occupy different spaces--one inside, one outside, both separated by a barn door--effectively symbolizing the pronounced divisions in America at the time.

Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967) Nighthawks, 1942 Edward Hopper often painted solitary, metropolitan figures, perhaps none more famous than the ones in Nighthawks. Painted in rich blues, yellows, and reds, a waiter tends to three customers in a fluorescent-lit diner, the city streets empty outside the large windows. This 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle re-creates the clean lines and bold colors of the realist scene in stunning detail.

Thomas Cole’s (American, 1801–1848) depictions of the of New York’s Catskill wilderness launched the nation’s first native art movement. The Hudson River Valley school arose during a period of exploration, expansion, and a growing desire to preserve areas of unspoiled beauty. Artists such as Cole paid homage to the play of light on sky, water, and land as they infused their work with the sense of humankind's smallness in the face of natural grandeur. After Cole’s death, a second generation of Hudson River Valley school artists, including Frederic Edwin Church, Jasper Francis Cropsey, and Martin Johnson Heade, carried on this American tradition.
