Ralph Woehrman’s drypoint, roulette, and mezzotint Abe Lincoln is based on a photograph of Lincoln made just before his death. The deliberate scratching of the plate alerts the viewer to the photograph of the aged president, but also unsettles expectations of portraiture, suggesting that the image is more than a likeness; perhaps it is also a suggestion of sadness or a sinister reminder of the president’s death.
