Did You Know?

For two months in 2020, the faces of Black citizens killed by police were projected on a monument to Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

Description

After witnessing police using tear gas against demonstrators, Richmond artists Dustin Klein and Alex Criqui began projecting images of Black victims of police violence and important Black historical figures onto a monument to Robert E. Lee, who was commander of the Confederate States Army. The face here is that of Oscar Grant III, who was 22 when fatally shot by police in Oakland, California, on a rapid transit platform early on New Year’s Day 2009.
